At the top here I've included my results from some of my favourite self-awareness tests. I believe in the power of being open and vulnerable. So here I am, exposed in a tangible, objective manner. You can see what I am, and what I'm not.
Strengths: People Person. Outgoing and Friendly. Kind and Loving. Emotional Intelligence. Routine and Consistency.
Weaknesses: Discouraged when unable to help. Easily hurt. Struggle to be flexible and adventurous.
So you can see how I have my struggles to face, just like you do. I have discovered techniques and concepts to minimise my weaknesses and enhance my strengths, and it is that approach that I want to deliver to you all. Read on to find out about my full journey, and how I came to this understanding of myself and my mission.
When I entered my teenage years, I was an unhappy young man who used binge eating as a coping mechanism. Eventually, at age 13, I weighed 17 stone. I continued to struggle throughout my teenage years with my body image and self-esteem. I was bullied and struggled to form relationships with others, especially romantically. At age 17, I had finally found a girlfriend, but I was beaten up in front of her by a group of four guys.
This event snapped something in me, and I started to become obsessed with exercise and food. I exercised compulsively and became fixated on what I ate, when I ate, and how much I ate. After being obese at 13, I moved across the spectrum as an early adult and developed a restrictive eating disorder, which I suffered with from the ages of 18-21.
During this period I also developed Depression. My life started to feel empty and meaningless. I was abusing caffeine and alcohol to bring some semblance of feeling to my life. At age 19, I started to wake up in the mornings, and wish I hadn't woken up at all.
On New Year's Day 2013 I made the decision that I wasn't going to keep living my life this way. I changed my lifestyle and my mindset. I finally engaged with a lifelong dream of becoming an author, publishing my first novel at just 20 years old, and my second at age 21.
I served as Vice-President and President of the Glasgow University Psychology Society and successfully graduated. It was during this time that I really accelerated my interest in personal development: studying positive psychology and self-help as well as incorporating practices such as yoga and meditation into my life. In my final year, I realised that I could use the lessons I had learned from my hardships and this self-education to help and inspire others, so I resolved to set up my own business after graduation.
When I had finished my final exams, I received a letter from my Dad, telling me that he had terminal cancer, and only had a few months left to live. Just as I had overcome some difficult personal battles and experienced great personal growth, I confronted my biggest challenge of all.
My Dad was an amazing influence in my life, and that is why I have devoted a page of this website to him, and there you can find out all about the incredible man he was. Dad died just a month after my graduation, and I have never felt so much pain. At age 22, I had lost my greatest mentor and one of my best friends.
However, from that pain, I gained renewed purpose and suddenly everything in my life gained a whole new perspective. I was given an insight into the fragility of life, and how important it is to chase our dreams and fulfill our potential in this lifetime. I wanted to carry on Dad’s teachings, and make him proud. I realised how important my new passion was, to create a life of love, to help others, to complete what I am meant to achieve in my life. That is what I have sought to do ever since.
In my work, I teach people the power of their story. I use my story as an example of what's possible. I highlight how we can turn our struggles into success. I would not be doing what I'm doing now if I hadn't faced all the challenges I have.
My work is essentially story-telling. I take people through a narrative of how they can change their lives. From my earliest years all I wanted to do was tell stories, now I am living that dream. My characters are Psychology and Personal Development. I create chapters based on knowledge and strategy. I empower people to become the hero of their story.
